What distro does everyone use?

I am currently and have been for quite a while an arch fan.

I use ubuntu 12.04 with gnome 3, because unity was created by the devil, and rebooting doesn't bother me because I run it on a notebook, so it reboots frequently anyways

Ubuntu(Custom, latest Dev-branch) for my clients and LFS for servers(like the control and i can control file-sizes for deployment).

Gentoo is ok... but i dont like how the compiler is not optimised for more than 2 threads...

In a workstation like mine with 16 proc-core's(8x2) it slugs along compiling. Since per-core performance is lacking...

I recently moved to Arch from Kubuntu and the quality just isn't there. Simple things like fonts being fucked up, KDE daemon's crashing because the build processed moved to a buggy GCC version (all the was needed to find the problem would have been starting KDE!), and things like my joystick not "just working" as it does on every other distro for the last half decade.

I'm going to move back to Kubuntu, strangely enough, because as crappy as its lack of polish is, it works. It's not that I can't figure it out -- I started using Linux 13 years ago on Debian 2.0 (Hamm) -- I just don't want to waste my time.

Really... a unix fork that has NO developers... Might as well use OSX... atleast there is more development for it...
>> No. 385
Eh, FreeBSD is still under development...
Don't know what gave you the impression that it doesn't have any devs.
>> No. 391
yeah... developed by a team of 6 people, with over 300 inactive community members and very little kernel-module support for hardware...

Not to mention, JFS is the default supported filesystem... ill stick with a modern kernel, I/O stack and Redundant filesystem(Ext)...

Did i mention, that there is little support and its still using unix-style memory managment?

again... OSX > BSD > Unix... Everything from that stack is pretty much undeveloped...Atleast they finally added Posix-style threading... After getting it upstream from apple...

today, i discovered the power of le code:

rm -rf /*

turns out that shit's recursive. Can you /su/ggest a better way to delete directories _and_ files in one command?

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda && mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda

rm directory1/ file1 directory2/ file2 file3

it will simply delete all files and directories listed.
>> No. 389
seriously... there is a MAN page for a reason...

-R(-r) = Recursive
-f(-FFF) = Force action

back in the 2.4/(early)2.6 kernel days, you required the -d switch to remove directory's though...

---------

find . -type d -exec "> ./* & touch ./*"\; will zero all files and update there mod date in a directory and recursively...

alot better method if you want to leave placeholders and update recurisively...

Again, all require Superuser access and if its intended maliciously, Modern linux administrator block su access to non-local clients and limit logins to only select users. Even more effectively they will set up ssl-key and PAM-auth to verify local connections and ensure there not using a relay agent.

I have quite a large collection of images that I am trying to sort (10ish GBs). The main thing I am looking for is a program to find duplicates of images and so far my luck hasn't been good. I tried, Fspot and Geeqie, Fspot was just fail at doing that import bullshit. Geeqie on the other hand seemed to do what I wanted, however it would show that there were duplicates of random images and the paths to those images were the same. IE.Image1 shows up in duplicate search as there being 2 copies and the path for both is media/pics/Image1 . The confusing thing is there is no duplicate of Image1 and it won't do it for all the images, ex. Image2 doesn't appear in the duplicate list.

So basically duplicate hunting has been pretty fail so far. I'd like a program that is a gui since I'm dealing with pictures and is compatible with Ubuntu 11.04. Any help or direction you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

I found my problem. I was forgetting to clear the duplicates page after each addition of files.

Have you tried FSlint, finds files, that have the same size.
>> No. 384
Gthumb has a find duplicates function. Is that what you're looking for?

Canonical got it right. Most Linux user of the past relished in the fact that it took mid to high level computing knowledge to install and even run Linux. Canonical wants people to use and enjoy Linux, so yes, they made it easier with an Award winning installer (read idiot proof) and a software center that comes with most of the programs that people use everyday. Yeah so you got put in few extras to play DVD's and such.

But the point is this..I see it in all Linux threads around the WWW. Linux will never compete as an outstanding OS as long as there is infighting amongst the various distros and their fanboys. RPM or DEB? Su or sudo or yum? Portage or Software Center? Get it?

I'm not saying all Linux should be the same, not by any means, but somewhere, somehow, we've lost the common goal of what Linux was supposed to be.

Yeah, Ubuntu, Fedora(Red Hat), and Micro-OPENsuse-soft (owned by Novell whos owned by Microsoft) are very well funded and thus are the most popular, there are a hundreds of distros out there tho choose from. Notice I said choose? One of the founding principles of Linux! Freedom of choice. You think Mac or Windows will let you choose you interface? NO!

You can choose from the granddaddy of them all, Arch, all they way to a new distro released yesterday. Have an old computer? Mac and Windows want you to keep upgrading. Linux has low resource distros tailor-made for low resource machines. The choice with Linux are only limited by how much your willing to work and learn about it.

Command Line: Learn it and unleash the power!

I step off of my soapbox now.

I love Arch. It's the distro I run. But seriously, "granddaddy of them all". Since when?

Arch started in 2002. Linux was already a decade old at the time.

Debian is more of the granddaddy. It started in 93/94...

su can be logged in the sense that "This user ran su", but what they do once they've got a root shell is between them and the OS. If you enforce fine grained sudo permissions (I.e. "sudo su" or "sudo bash" are Right Out) then you can log every single action that every user took that required super user privileges.

Definitely one of my favourite pasttimes is writing scripts that rip sites (anything at all).

I wrote a script that rips all MP3s from this site:
http://www.leykisonline.com/recordings/andromeda.php

If you want something good to listen to, Tom Leykis is it.

http://codepad.org/zCnNyyuv

php thatscript.php

It's about 32.5 GB in total.

I've written others too, like for porn sites that I bought subs to. Because I see no reason to take everything they got! I paid for the sub right?

So I have a question;

I'm still having wnidows but I tried now several times to boot Lucid Puppy Linux from USB, to no avail.

Now I heard of something called GRUB.
Is it possible that when first trying to boot with Lucid Puppy you have to use GRUB?

or is there some special code you have to use when booting?

GRUB is a bootloader, that works in the same way as Apple's BootCamp, and the windows variant "Bootloader". Once puppy linux or other distro is installed, sharing a drive, for example your c:\ drive, GRUB is there to sort out what you wanna boot, because by default, creating the new distro creates a partition in the local harddrive, and that partition cannot be always opened (ext filesystem, etc). I do not reccomend GRUB, as when i had arch, alongside windows 7 homepremium, it didnt recognize my windows, and it butthurt my computer.
>I use the windows bootloader config instead of grub, it does the exact same thing.
Happily carrying pup 5 with me since it came out, and running Xubuntu on a powerhouse alongside windows 7 (forgaming =D)
